Wednesday morning Dad was on one of his regular rides out through Riverdale and Layton. As he was riding in Layton he crashed and hit his head. We don't have a lot of details about the crash and if we did it wouldn't change things today. He was wearing a helmet and doing everything right. It's just one of those things. Sometimes "life's not fair".
His friends were at his side immediately and he was rushed to the hospital. We were blessed with wonderful doctors and surgeons and they quickly went to work. Among several secondary injuries (broken ribs and other stuff that's not new to my dad) they could see that his brain was swelling and this has been their primary concern.
Two and a half days have passed and we have been taking turns camping out in the waiting room at the ICU. The nurses know us, and we know them. We even get to use the "staff only" bathroom. Physically dad is doing pretty well given his injuries. He is breathing mostly on his own. Because brain injuries cause swelling for 3-5 days, his doctors have been keeping him heavily sedated as any extra stimulation could add to his injury. In another couple days they will try to remove the sedation more to see how he responds.
Nothing at this point is certain but we have seen encouraging signs. We are positive and prayerful and will do our best to provide updates.
Keeping you all in our prayers! Thanks for keeping us posted!
